What is the flu?

The flu (influenza) is a common viral infection that spreads easily from person to person, usually through coughs and sneezes.
Typical flu symptoms include:

  • Fever

  • Headache

  • Sore throat

  • Aches and pains in the body

Flu viruses are most common during the winter months. Because flu strains change from year to year, last season’s vaccine may not protect you against this year’s strain. Protection from the flu vaccine also reduces over time, which is why it’s important to stay up to date with your vaccinations.

How long will my appointment take?

Your flu vaccination appointment at RushGP will take around 15 minutes.

Price

  • If you’re in one of the recommended groups, you may be eligible for the flu vaccine free of charge*.

  • For others, the service costs €30.

Who should get the winter flu vaccine? (and free for the following)

The flu vaccine is recommended every year for certain groups, including anyone who:

  • Is aged 60 and over

  • Is pregnant

  • Has a long-term medical condition (e.g. diabetes, heart, kidney, liver, lung or neurological disease)

  • Has cancer

  • Has a weakened immune system (due to illness or treatment)

  • Has a BMI over 40

  • Has a haemoglobinopathy

  • Has Down syndrome

  • Lives in a nursing home or long-term care facility

  • Is a healthcare worker with direct patient contact

  • Cares for someone at risk of flu due to a long-term health condition

  • Lives with someone at risk of flu or with Down syndrome

  • Has a serious mental health condition

  • Has regular close contact with poultry, waterfowl, or pigs

Who should avoid the flu vaccine?

There are very few people who cannot receive the flu vaccine. It may not be suitable if:

  • You’ve had a serious allergic reaction to a flu vaccine or one of its ingredients in the past

  • You’re taking certain medications, such as cancer treatment drugs

  • You have extremely low levels of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell)

Am I eligible for a free flu vaccine?

If you are in one of the at-risk or recommended groups, the flu vaccination is free of charge*.
For others, a standard fee may apply.
